Happy Tumblr Tuesday all. A while ago we posted a short list of Public Media-ites on Tumblr. On Columbus Day, NPR Fresh Air posted a similar thread asking for the employees to step up.

So, here is a new recommendation list of active and semi-active public media shows and stations and more here on Tumblr…

Welcome The Tico Times, the first Central American news org added to the News Media Tumblrs directory! It’s an English-language newspaper based in San José, Costa Rica.

I’m considering adding inactive news org Tumblrs to the directory, but marking them a different color on the map. What do you think? Or is it better to just leave them all out?

Removed links: I’ve removed some links to Tumblrs that haven’t been updated in a month or whose summer intern left without announcing a replacement or whatever. I’ve also cleared out some others that didn’t belong in the directory but had been left over from a larger list of organizations on Tumblr (I’m still finding those, yes).

Cool project: A site I’m not adding in the directory is What’s your 9/11?, a project by the Voice of America (submitted by jrstahl). I think it’s a little too narrowly focused for the directory. But it’s worth mentioning here, especially given this upcoming anniversary.

Hello, thanks for listing the Guardian's Tumblr. Any chance it could get a marker on the map?

The Guardian does have a marker on the map. I explain on the Submit page that it helps to get a street address for Tumblrs because location markers will overlap otherwise.

Right now, the Guardian and Newsflick are the only London Tumblrs without a street address, and Newsflick wins out as the topmost layer. Not sure why, but it might be an alphabetical thing. (The Economist is the other London Tumblr on the map, but I found their mailing address while compiling the data for this project, so it’s not overlapping with anything.)

Luckily the Guardian has their address listed fairly prominently through search, so I’ll make the update this weekend. But if you are submitting a Tumblr, please include your mailing address. I won’t list the street number, but this way your location markers won’t overlap with each other (unless you’re both in the same building… in which case, feel free to give an alternate address).

Corrected links: BreakingNews (the previous link had been to the corporate blog), and MinnPost (name changed from Minnesota Post).

New links: ABS-CBN, Agenzia Nazionale Stampa Associata, Austin American-Statesman, Boston Globe, California Watch, Capital New York, Christian Science Monitor, GMA News, KIRO-7 Eyewitness News, Lake County News, LoHud, Neighborhoodr, New Orleans’ Times-Picayune, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, The Nation, The Political Notebook, The Province, The Vancouver Sun, Walla Walla Union-Bulletin, and ZeitVox.

Removed links: Rolling Stone. Nothing against Rolling Stone! But the link was left over from a bigger list I was compiling of print publications. That list was really unfocused, though. If you’re interested in making a topics-based directory, let me know. I don’t have a ton of time, but I’m willing to share what I know (it’s helpful if you know Google fusion tables, HTML, CSS, and a little bit of JavaScript).

Politics: Some of you submitted links to Politico and DC Decoder, as well as other political Tumblrs. After some thought, I’ve decided not to include them. This could change in the future, but I feel like those would work better in some kind of U.S. Politics directory, which I don’t plan on making (again, get in touch if you are).

Inactive Tumblrs: Some of you submitted links for inactive/parked news accounts — I won’t be adding those.

Other Tumblrs: I ran out of time but I’ll take a look at some of the other links this week.

Wow, thanks for all your submissions, corrections, and comments. I’ll be getting to the updates this weekend — it’s a pretty nice day outside in Los Angeles, and, well, I’d like to experience it. I’ll post an update when I’m done with the latest edits.

First thing’s first — some of you might know me as the blogger behind the Los Angeles Times Tumblr. I want to preemptively point out that this is strictly a personal weekend project that has absolutely nothing to do with The Times, the Tribune Co., its affiliates, and so on.

Cool, now that that’s out of the way, here are some quick notes:

If you’re an organization, please submit a link with a mailing adress — I won’t publish it, but location markers with generic cities end up overlapping on the Google map. Of course, if you’re a personal Tumblr, I really, really don’t want your personal address for all those liability issues. A general address like the 600 block of Newton Street is totally doable, though, if you find that your location marker is constantly being blocked by some other Tumblr on the map. I’m also considering expanding the list to include the bloggers who run these Tumblrs (it’s an accountability thing — sorry, I’m a journalist), so if you want to include that info too, feel free, though that won’t be ready for a while.

For organizations with multiple Tumblrs: I don’t want the index to get unwieldy, so I suggest making a page in which you list everything you’ve got.

I’m a human, so if you’re a regular on the Tumblr #news scene, and I forgot to include you, then just drop a message. It’s not some personal vendetta or anything. I’ve already noticed a few that I’ve missed because I’m a bonehead. That’ll be corrected this weekend.
